Derek Van Berkel's global and local work evaluates the human impact of land-cover and land-use changes on ecosystem services, employing spatial analysis and geovisualizations to craft solutions for environmental challenges and advance health equity. His interests in global health equity align with the Center's themes of addressing social and environmental determinants of health and developing technical solutions. Van Berkel's research leverages social theory, big data, and advanced modeling techniques, including machine learning and spatial-temporal modeling, to investigate spatial determinants of environmental change and promote health equity.
