Seed grants

Where new ideas get their first chance

Seed Grants support early-stage, exploratory projects that build new ideas, partnerships, and approaches in global health equity. These awards are intended to generate foundational evidence and strengthen collaborations that can lead to larger-scale research or implementation efforts.

Every Seed Grant project is co-led by a U-M faculty member and a collaborator based in a low- or middle-income country (LMIC), and involves faculty from at least three distinct U-M schools, colleges, or units.

Who should apply

Applications are welcome from University of Michigan faculty across all schools and colleges, at all career stages.

Priority areas for this cycle

This cycle, we especially welcome proposals aligned with one or more of the following:

  • Early-career investigators within 10 years of completing their terminal degree
  • Equitable AI and Health Technology

How to apply

Applicants must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) no longer than two pages via InfoReady. Selected teams will be invited to submit a full proposal.
We encourage applicants to reach out whenever they have an idea and feel ready for feedback — for some teams that's early in the process, for others it's later, once the idea has taken shape. Consultation isn't required, but it's available to help with logistical questions or scientific development.

Review criteria

Proposals are evaluated on:

  • Strength and clarity of the global partnership, including evidence of co-design
  • Scientific rigor and feasibility of the project within the proposed timeline and budget
  • Alignment with this cycle's priority areas
  • Potential to generate preliminary data or evidence for future, larger-scale funding
  • Clarity of the problem statement and its relevance to the partner community

Awardees are expected to:

  • Submit a brief progress report four months after project start
  • Attend quarterly check-in meetings with CGHE staff
  • Submit a final report at the close of the project period
  • Pursue follow-on funding within seven years
