Mary Gallagher’s global work focuses on comparative politics, especially Chinese domestic politics and US-China relations. She has special interests in social policy, human rights, and labor and employment law, especially in China and Taiwan. Her interests in global health equity align with the Center's theme of addressing social and environmental determinants of health. Gallagher’s research looks at urbanization and social change in China, especially as related to internal migration, economic development, and workplace conditions. More specifically, her work examines economic and social inequality in China, social security and social welfare, and the status of rights at the workplace with a particular focus on rural migrants in China.
