The University of Michigan School of Public Health’s own Matthew L. Boulton oversaw the latest edition of a book widely recognized as among the most comprehensive and informative volumes on public health.
Boulton, senior associate dean for Global Public Health and Pearl L. Kendrick Collegiate Professor of Global Public Health, served as senior editor for the 16th edition of Maxcy-Rosenau-Last Public Health and Preventive Medicine, released this summer.
First published in 1913, the textbook has long been requisite reading for public health students and professionals alike. At more than 2,000 pages, Boulton’s version appears 13 years after the last edition and expands on its predecessors with four entirely new sections, including one dedicated to global health. Each of the 180-plus individual chapters was prepared by leaders in their respective fields, including dozens of Michigan faculty representing public health, public policy, and medicine.
“It would be hard to overstate the influence this book has had on me as a physician, public health practitioner, and academician,” Boulton writes in the book’s preface. “I purchased my first copy, the 11th edition, as a medical student almost 40 years ago . . . and it would not be possible for me to recount the many times I have recommended the text to my students, preventive medicine residents, physician colleagues, and fellow faculty over the years.”
